Singer Friðrik Ómar is working on a new record (still untitled) – his second solo album in fourteen years. Gayiceland.is sat down with the renowned muscician who says the newest offspring will be even better and more energetic than previous records.
How would you define the album?
Well for starters it’s gonne be hundred percent pop music under strong influence from the eighties, in other words a really feel good kind of record (smiles). Secondly it will only include songs written by myself – the last time I published an album with my own material was fourteen years ago. In between I’ve only ventured in publishing my own songs one at a time.
Where did the idea come from?
I had already made demos from a couple of songs I liked, some of which have been in the making the past six years and decided I wanted to do something more with them. Truth be told it was quite time-consuming to take the songs into a direction that clicked with me as a singer. The outcome will be a “concert” album in the sense that I wanted to make a record that would be enjoyable to perform live.
Any particular song(s) that are especially dear to you?
At the moment I’m equally proud of them all. But that could can change as soon as I start performing them live. I tend to connect more with my songs through singing than playing them on a piano.
How do you feel about performing your own music?
I feel good. It’s always good to perform good stuff and it only makes it better if you have written it yourself (laughs)! At least I can say that the record is better and more energetic than anything else I’ve done in the past. I wrote it first and foremost for myself and consider it a big bonus if someone else likes it.
Who’s working on it with you?
My producer is Stefán Örn. We work really well together. Both of us are open to discussion and new ideas. Then there are plenty of very talented musicians in the mix which for most part I haven’t worked with before. That is a good thing ’cause it kinda keeps you on your toes. I really wanted to get people who liked the music we were working on and it really turned out well I think.
When is it out?
The album will hit stores in October so the next weeks will be pretty hectic, that’s for sure. But this is something I love to do so I couldn’t be happier.
Fridrik Ómar has recorded over 150 songs that have ended up on over 40 different albums. He is probably best known across Europe for participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008 with the popular song This is My Life alongside Regina Ósk.
