Drag-Súgur The Musical.

Drag-Súgur the Musical

🎵Guys in short dresses and girls with moustaches…🎵

Would you expect anything else from this talented group of drag queens and kings?

Drag-Súgur is back at again with an amazing show set for tonight, Saturday, January 11th at 21.30! What kind of musical is this, you ask? We chatted with Gógó Starr (Sigurður Guðjónsson) & Bóbó Starr (Bjarni Óskarsson) to get all the tea, ready to spill.

What type of musical should we expect? Parodies on classics? Original Drag-Súgur material? Lip-syncs or vocalists?

Gógó & Bóbó: “You can expect anything and everything at this show! There will be the traditional drag lip-syncs, but also choreographed dance numbers, live singing, live music and a lot of laughs. We’re mixing together musical classics and making a big fun show out of it.”

So, Anything Goes, quite literally! If Sound of Music, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Wizard of Oz, or any of the RuPaul’s Drag Race musical episodes tickle your fancy, you’ll want to catch this. There’s sure to be some tongue-in-cheek references to all your favorites and more! You may even see some Icelandic musical references in there too for some good ol’ royal heritage.

How long has Drag-Súgur been at Gaukurinn, and is this the first musical you’ve done there?

Gógó & Bóbó: “Drag-Súgur started back in November 2015, and although there have been musical numbers on stage throughout the years, this is the first official musical-themed Drag-Súgur. So naturally, we’re extremely excited to camp it all the way up. We highly recommend that you catch the happy-hour and delicious Veganaes food (until 21:00) and have a gay ol’ time at Gaukurinn.”

Vera Schtilld aka Sigga Eyrún.

Who should we expect in the cast of this musical?

Gógó & Bóbó: “The evening is hosted by Faye Knús, the human encyclopedia of musicals. Along with her we have a bunch of other performers including myself, Gógó Starr, as well as Jenny Purr, Lola Von Heart, Chardonnay Bublée, Milo de Mix, Aurora Borealis, Skaði, Yan Nuss Starr, Turner Strait and special musical guest Vera Schtilld aka Sigga Eyrún, singer extraordinaire! As you can see, this is a packed show filled to the brim with talent!

After the show, the amazing Mighty Bear will DJ to keep the party going for a sensational Saturday night.”

Cats.

Are we going to see anything from Cats?

Gógó: “Oh god, I hope not. Cats is simply not good. There, I said it.”

We heard Drag-Súgur is a member at the Reykjavík Tool Library. What’s going on there?

Gógó & Bóbó: “We’ve been building our sets, backdrops, and decorations for Drag-Súgur at the Reykjavík Tool Library’s DIY Center since Pride last year. We just finished making giant glittery musical notes for the event, and the entire process was made possible in just one afternoon with the help of Anna, the founder, and her amazing service.”

Well, we all know the backstage at Gaukurinn is justtttt big enough for queens to change panties in without getting them in a bunch. So, can this space be a bigger back stage for Drag-Súgur’s work?

Gógó & Bóbó: “Absolutely! As a member you only have to bring the materials you’re working with and don’t have to worry about owning the tools or the space and such, it’s a genius idea. Check out the Reykjavík Tool Library if you haven’t already!”

Ok. We’re pumped for this musical now, but what else has Drag-Súgur got up it’s sleeves for 2020? Tell us more!

Gógó & Bóbó: “Oooh mama, we have fabulous guests coming our way and fantastic new shows to share with the world. On February 14th we’ll have a lovely Valentine’s show with a special guest all the way from the UK; Crystal Lubrikunt herself, the lip-sync assassin! On March 13th we’ll have a David Bowie tribute, because who doesn’t want to see drag queens in space? Then on April 3rd we have our biannual Disney show extravaganza! We also have Drag-Lab happening every month, where any aspiring drag artist can come and take the stage, and big plans for Pride and the rest of the year as well.”
