Great Expectations: A human rights festival

The National Queer Organization (i. Samtökin ’78) have planned a human rights festival at the Throttarheimilid (i. Þróttarheimilið), close to Laugardalur, which will be held today between 17 – 18.

The purpose of the festival, which goes by the name Great Expectations: Respect – Rights – Humanity, is to emphasize that the human rights, equality and dignity of every human being are valued the most in our society. It is also being held as a direct response to a sermon held at Laugardalshöll arena tonight where American preacher Franklin Graham will take the stage. Graham has been criticized for fighting against gay rights, such a marriage equality.

However reverend Sigríður Guðmarsdóttir and Sigurður Hólm Gunnarsson from Siðmennt (i. Siðmennt) The Icelandic Ethical Humanist association will address guests at the Great Expectations festival today. You can also expect some live music. So there should be something for everyone. Anna Pála Sverrisdóttir, president of the National Queer Organization, will host.

Make sure to show up early for the festival to get seats. Best way to get to Throttarheimilid is by foot, bus or car, just remember to park legally as the parking zone will like be full around that time. You can get more info on the event at Facebook or homepage of The National Queer Organization.
