[dropcap4]I[/dropcap4]celandic band Sigur Rós, with openly gay front man Jonsi, not only made an appearance on last night’s episode of The Simpsons but also contributed music to the television show. Sigur Rós therefore followed in the footsteps of famous bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, The White Stripes and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. However no other outside band has ever composed and performed more music for the show, according to the webpage of Sigur Rós.
Simpsons-creator Matt Groening is a long time fan of Sigur Rós and says “and we’re honored to bring their Icelandic, ambient moods to our goofy cartoon show.” Former PM Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and singer Björk (well at least a statue of Björk – in the famous swan dress of course!) also made cameos.

The episode, titled The Saga of Carl, sees Homer, Moe, Lenny and Carl purchasing a winning lottery ticket. Carl steals the ticket and flees to his home country Iceland with the friends on hot pursuit to get the cash back. Along the way they learn a couple of words, eat shark and visit The Blue Lagoon.
The show of course pokes fun at Icelanders, most of which brought tears to our eyes:
Homer (speaking before a small crowd): “Is everyone in Iceland here?”
Icelanders: “No. (One person shows up). Now they are!”
Just one thing we don’t get: why do Icelander’s speak English with a Russian accent on The Simpsons? (Big smile.)
