“I heard the pride parade was taking place on my visit so I asked if I could participate. The organisers were ecstatic to have me,” says Jón Gnarr, mayor of Reykjavik, who will take part in the Faroe Pride, Faroe Islands, this Friday.
Gnarr is going on an official visit to the Faroe Islands starting tomorrow and untill Monday. The Faroe Pride is not part of the program but the mayor none the less wanted to show his full support to LGBT rights by taking part in it. So far tolerance towards homosexuality has been running short in the Faroe Islands, he says, and the issue more controversial than in Iceland. “When it comes to LGBT rights we Icelanders are on the forefront.”
The mayor is known for appearing dressed in drag on Reykjavik Pride. Asked what he’s going to wear in the parade in the Faroe Islands he mysteriously answers: “It’s going to be a surprise.”
