Furry, Fluffy, and Fabulous: How Bangsafélagið is Celebrating Every Body

It’s time to come out of your caves, because local bear group Bangsafélagið is hosting a pool party, MOIST, at Vestubæjarlaug today, February the 9th. The perfect opportunity to unwind, enjoy a hot dip in the pool, and spend time together in a welcoming atmosphere.

Origins and Purpose of Bangsafélagið

Andres Pelaez, board member of Bangsafélagið.

The Icelandic bear community found a new home in 2019 with the creation of Bangsafélagið, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering connection, visibility, and celebration for bears and those who identify with the culture. The idea for the organization emerged right after the final edition of Bears on Ice, a beloved festival that had been running for 15 years.

When you don’t look like the people in fashion magazines or on TV, it’s easy to believe you’re not worthy of love. We know this feeling firsthand, but we also know that our bodies are beautiful.

When the original organizers stepped down, former volunteers – now board members of Bangsafélagið, Andres Pelaez and Jeffre Scott – saw an opportunity to carry on the tradition with a broader perspective.

Rather than simply keeping the festival alive, they wanted to expand the bear community’s presence beyond just one annual event. Their goal was to create a space where bears and their admirers could gather regularly, share experiences, and feel empowered in their identities. Through Bangsafélagið, they aimed to increase visibility and offer a more inclusive and engaging community for bears in Iceland.

What Is Bear Culture?

Bear culture is a subculture within the LGBTQ+ community that embraces body positivity, different expressions of masculinity, and deep friendships. It is a space where larger men and those who admire them come together to celebrate self-acceptance and individuality. While many bears fit the classic image—bigger, bearded, and rugged- the bear spectrum is diverse.

• Cubs are younger or smaller bears,
• Muscle bears focus on fitness,
• Otters are leaner but still hairy,
• Wolves are scruffier and more toned,
• Polar bears proudly embrace their silver or white fur.

Despite these distinctions, the core value of the bear community is inclusivity- a celebration of different body types, identities, and expressions of masculinity.

Building a Community in Reykjavík

The early days of Bangsafélagið were met with enthusiasm and support. Thanks to the strong foundation built during Bears on Ice, the transition from festival to full-fledged organization was smooth. The response was overwhelmingly positive- he community wanted more visibility, and Bangsafélagið was determined to provide it.

One of the first steps was participating in Reykjavik’s annual Pride march, where the group made a bold statement: “The bears are coming out of the caves!” Since then, they have continued to build their presence through various events, social gatherings, and online platforms, ensuring that bears in Iceland have a welcoming space to connect.

More Than Just Events: A Mission of Visibility and Self-Acceptance

While Bangsafélagið is known for organizing events, its mission goes beyond just social gatherings. The organization is deeply committed to self-love and body positivity, challenging harmful societal beauty standards.

Many people struggle with body image, especially when mainstream media promotes a narrow definition of attractiveness. Bangsafélagið aims to break these stereotypes by showing that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. As Andrés explains: “When you don’t look like the people in fashion magazines or on TV, it’s easy to believe you’re not worthy of love. We know this feeling firsthand, but we also know that our bodies are beautiful. We can love ourselves, and there are plenty of people out there who love us too.”

Through visibility, outreach, and positive representation, Bangsafélagið is helping individuals reclaim their confidence and find acceptance within themselves and the community.

MOIST: A Unique and Playful Event

One of Bangsafélagið’s most intriguing new events is today’s pool party, MOIST (This Month’s Outing in Speedos or Trunks)- a lighthearted and welcoming event designed to bring people together in Iceland’s famous hot pools.

The idea behind MOIST was simple: create a fun, low-pressure gathering where bears and their admirers can relax, connect, and enjoy the warmth of the geothermal pools. Taking place in one of the coldest months of the year, MOIST is an opportunity for attendees to step out of hibernation and embrace body positivity in a casual and inclusive environment.

Unlike some of Bangsafélagið’s more traditional events, MOIST isn’t about partying- it’s about community and connection. Though primarily attended by locals, international visitors are always welcome to join in. Depending on the success of this first edition, MOIST could become a recurring favorite among the community.

Beyond MOIST: A Variety of Bear-Friendly Events

Bangsafélagið regularly hosts a variety of social events to keep the bear community active and engaged throughout the year. These include: movie nights, hot dog picnics in the park, pride celebrations, a Bear cookie swap during Christmas.

Additionally, Reykjavik Bear, the annual bear festival, has become a major highlight, attracting over 100 guests from around the world. Each year, the event brings a mix of locals and international visitors together for an unforgettable celebration.

One particularly memorable event for the organizers was the 2024 Pride march afterparty, which featured an incredible turnout, great music, and an exciting bingo game. Another standout was the infamous Tops- Off Party at Reykjavik Bear, known for its electrifying atmosphere and uninhibited fun.

We can love ourselves, and there are plenty of people out there who love us too.

Growth, Collaboration, and the Future of Bangsafélagið

Since its founding, Bangsafélagið has significantly expanded Iceland’s bear community, transitioning from a once-a-year event to a regularly engaged and active group. What was once a small network of friends has now grown into an organized and visible community.

Bangsafélagið also collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations to strengthen its impact. The group operates under the umbrella of Samtökin 78, Iceland’s national queer organization, and has worked with Hinsegin Dagar (Reykjavik Pride) on discussions about bear culture.

In 2023, after the Reykjavik Bear event, Bangsafélagið proudly donated funds to Trans Ísland, showing its commitment to supporting the broader queer community.

Looking ahead, the organization aims to Increase local participation in events, encourage more volunteers for Reykjavik Bear, strengthen ties with international bear communities, ensure representation of Icelandic bears in global events.

The future is bright for Bangsafélagið, as it continues to provide a space of love, acceptance, and celebration for bears in Iceland and beyond.
