María Helga Guðmundsdóttir was elected chairman of Samtökin ’78, the national queer organization, at the organization’s annual meeting yesterday.
María was elected with 184 votes but the runner-up, Kristín Sævarsdóttir, got 152 votes. María Helga has been acting as chairman since May of this year when Hilmar Hildar Magnússon resigned.
Over 300 members of Samtökin ’78 attended the meeting. Never in the history of the organization have so many members been present at the organization’s annual meeting.
Only one person was in the running for vice chairman, Unnsteinn Jóhannesson, and was therefore chosen without election. Benedikt Traustason was elected treasurer of the organization and Júlía Margrét Einarsdóttir as secretary.
At the annual meeting it was also put to vote whether BDSM Iceland and Hin – Hinsegin Norðurland (a queer organization in the countryside of Iceland, with an emphasis on the North) should be granted membership. Both parties were granted affiliation.
