“Delves into sexual and ethnic self-image and elicits charges of exploitation.”
Before RuPaul’s Drag Race and Madonna’s Vogue there was “ball-culture,” drag-ball competitions in New York in the 1980’s in which African-American and Latino drag-queens mimicked the preening of high-fashion models and movie legends.
Now you have a chance to get an incredible look inside this eye-opening world, through the eyes of acclaimed filmmaker Jennie Livingston in her multi-award winning documentary Paris is Burning (1990) “which delves into sexual and ethnic self-image and elicits charges of exploitation” as it has been described by film critics.
Feminist film collective Aunt Rosa (i. Rósa frænka) will show Paris is Burning at the Community Center of The National Queer Organization (Samtökin ’78), Laugavegi 3, fourth floor, tonight at 8.30. Running time is 76 minutes. Please note that the film is not subtitled.
The screening will be followed by discussion.
Free entry.
