“This is just great for me and a recognition that I should keep on making music”
Icelandic singer and gay icon Hera Björk has won the Vina del Mar Song competition in Chile for best song. Hera Björk was awarded with 35.000 USD and a trophy in the form of a seagull.
“This is just great for me and a recognition that I should keep on making music,” Hera Björk said in a press conference which was held after the contest. “The past two weeks have been just incredible, but now the real work has begun, I need to seize the opportunity. It’s not enough to take the seagull home,” she added with a big smile on her face.
Hera Björk sang the winning song Because you can in Spanish and is currently working on more material. “We are recording more songs in Spanish which will be released in coming months.”
Tomorrow Hera Björk will perform the winning song again in live television for an estimated audience of one hundred million and for the first time without a jury.
Here Björk became known to the international gay community after participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in Norway in 2010, with the song Je ne Sais Quoi. She has released several albums and toured with none other than singer Björk and band Sigur Rós.
