Rannveig Traustadóttir, a professor in sociology at the University of Iceland, says that transgender-people have always existed in a recent interview with mbl.is. She points out that a certain percent of all children are born with undetermined sex every year, that is they have either both genitals or their sex is uncertain and therefore need to undergo surgery.
Rannveig thinks that society’s classification of the sex roles have been way too narrow so far. Because of this transgender-people have led a very difficult life which often ends with suicide. fortunately a more open discussion is now taking place in society.
