Iceland was chosen the Best European country at the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk Readers’ Travel Awards 2012.
According to guardian.co.uk the volcanic eruption in 2010 might be one of the reasons the country came in first place this year. “Iceland wins the crown this year, no doubt attracting visitors intrigued by all the footage of a landscape evolving and forming before our very eyes following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010, whose ash cloud forced the closure of European airspace.”
The full list of winners can be seen on guardian.co.uk. There is also a very nice article by Jamie Lafferty on wild-camping in Iceland.
