Rasmus Rasmussen, openly gay singer, guitarist, songwriter and popular radio host from The Faroe Islands, has died at age 32.
Rasmussen made the world headlines back in 2006 after being threatened and beaten up for being openly gay in The Faroe Islands where there’s still even today considerable discrimination against homosexuality. Rasmussen was rushed off to hospital and is considered to have suffered a nervous breakdown after that. According to sources he never really got over the attack and threats and sadly two days ago took his own life.
We here at GayIceland would like to remember Rasmussen for being a true hero who stood up not only for himself but for others who face discrimination and injustice every day.
Our heart goes out to Rasmussen’s family and friends and the LGBT community in Faroe Island at this difficult time.
