What’s on in April in LGBTQIA+ Iceland?

April is doing what Reykjavík does best, giving you just enough chaos to feel alive again after winter.

Easter weekend goes hard (as it should). You’ve got drag brunch, late-night shows, and enough glitter to resurrect anyone who’s been emotionally hibernating since January. It’s very much a “leave the house and see what happens” kind of energy, and you’ll probably end up somewhere you didn’t plan, talking to someone you didn’t expect.

But it’s not just party mode. There’s a strong mix this month. Theatre that leans into identity and queerness in a more political, emotional way. Community-led events that feel genuinely welcoming. A book club if you’re feeling intellectual – or just want cake and a reason to leave the house on a Tuesday.

That balance is what makes April work. You can go full chaos gremlin one night, then sit in a quiet room the next day talking about gender theory in comic book form. No one questions it. That’s just the rhythm.
It also feels a bit more social in a softer way. Not just big nights out, but spaces where people are actually connecting; smaller gatherings, niche communities, people finding their way into the scene in ways that feel low-pressure and open.

Overall, April feels like a reset. Less survival mode, more actual living. The city’s waking up, people are out again, and the queer scene is doing its thing; messy, thoughtful, welcoming, and occasionally a bit unhinged. Exactly as it should be.

Written by award-winning playwright Charlie Josephine, the play first gained international attention at Shakespeare’s Globe in London in 2022. The Icelandic production brings together a large ensemble cast and a strong creative team, combining theatre, movement, and music into an intense, emotionally charged performance.

The show leans into themes of identity, conflict, and self-definition, framing Joan’s story as both a personal and political struggle. Expect something raw, expressive, and unapologetically queer in tone.

Hinsegin Bókaklúbbur (Queer Book Club) – Kvár

When: Tuesday 21 April
Time: 20:00
Where: Samtökin ‘78, Suðurgata 3, 101 RVK
Cost: Free

For literary fans within the community, Iceland’s national queer organisation Samtökin 78 hosts a monthly book club open to all interested in getting together to discuss queer works of literature. This month’s book is Kvár: What is Being Genderqueer?.

This book is described as an illuminating glimpse into the experience of being genderqueer in Iceland.

A pioneering documentary comic about being genderqueer that explores the gender dualism of our society and the experience of identifying as neither strictly male nor female, both simultaneously, or something else entirely.

This book is the first-ever Icelandic documentary comic and marks a significant milestone in understanding and embracing genderqueer identities.

The narrative unfolds through heartfelt interviews with six genderqueer individuals, providing an intimate glimpse into their personal journeys and perspectives. Through their unique stories, readers gain insights into the diversity of genderqueer experiences and beliefs, challenging conventional gender norms.

Kvár: What is Being Genderqueer? fosters understanding and acceptance, creating a platform for dialogue and empathy.

By giving voice to these individuals, the book amplifies their struggles and triumphs, empowering all readers to celebrate the beauty of gender diversity.

The book can be found in bookstores, libraries and online. Cake and coffee will also be provided.

Söngleikjastælar: Viðlag

When: Saturday April 25
Time: 20:00
Where: Salurinn, Hamraborg 6, 200 Kópavogur
Cost: 6,900 ISK

A high-energy musical theatre concert celebrating classic and contemporary show tunes, performed by two of Iceland’s leading musical performers, Bjarni Snæbjörnsson and Sigga Eyrún. This edition brings in the Viðlag choir, a dynamic, relatively new musical theatre chorus known for blending staged performance with live vocal power.

Rather than a traditional narrative musical, the show is structured as a concert tribute to the genre itself; moving through iconic songs old and new, reinterpreted by experienced singer-actors backed by a live band.

The Viðlag choir adds a collective, theatrical layer to the performance. Since forming in 2021, they’ve built a reputation for ambitious, performance-driven concerts and original stage work, bringing a more ensemble-driven, slightly camp sensibility to the format.

This is part of an ongoing concert series that experiments with different approaches to musical theatre performance, each edition offering a slightly different tone or structure.
