Gógó Starr Gives us a new form of Lip Service

Known for her razor-sharp wit, dazzling performances, and unapologetic presence, Gógo Starr has become one of the most recognisable figures in Iceland’s drag scene. Now, the beloved queen is turning her talents to a new arena; sex education.

In collaboration with pioneering sex shop Blush, Gógó is leading a series of cheeky, educational workshops on oral sex, blending humour, performance, and genuine instruction to help people embrace sex positivity and level up their blowjob game. GayIceland was lucky enough to sit down with Gógó and ask the question that’s been on everyone’s lips since this queen first dazzled a stage in Iceland…. How’s your head?

“This is a way for many people at the events to learn about or explore things they might not have heard about or are too shy to ask about,” says Gógó.

GayIceland: So you’re going to be teaching some classes in conjunction with Blush about oral sex, is that right? How did this come about?

Gógó: “Basically Blush approached me and wanted to see if I would be interested in working on a project with them. They wanted to do some sort of event that I could be a part of to bring the fun of drag into the world of sex positivity. We came up with this idea of like a Vottaður Tottari which would roughly translate into English as ‘certified sucker’. So basically a person who’s really good at oral sex, teaching other people how to do it well.”

GayIceland: So is it a class on how to give a blowjob?

Gógó: “Yes, but it’s a little bit more than that too. It’s part one-woman show, part sex-education, part interactive party games. Because I’m a perfectionist, I really wanted to make this into something that actually helps people but is still fun. I really wanted people to leave with some sort of knowledge that could help improve their lives through better sex and it grew from there. We did a short run of it two years ago during the summer and now we’ve kind of perfected it to make it bigger and better.”

GayIceland: What kind of crowds have you had so far?

Gógó: “In the early days I noticed a lot of the participants were older women. I remember there were lots of them who came to me after the event. They were just so happy.

They said, “Thank you so much, you have answered so many questions for me. You helped me to understand things I was too afraid to look up.”

Over time it has really morphed into a big mix of the general public. In the past it was a lot of stag parties, bachelorette parties and fans of my work but now there are people from all walks of life.”

GayIceland: What can people expect when they come to the event?

Gógó: “Think of it like a combination between education, party games and loads of dick jokes. So when the audience arrives, they sit, and they choose how much they wish to interact. There are some fun moments with audience participation like a sort of dick ‘ring toss’ that actually helps you learn how to use cock rings. The rest of the time I’m educating with a big screen behind me. So I’m essentially just going through teaching material, but making it as fun and fabulous as I can.”

It’s part one-woman show, part sex-education, part interactive party games.

GayIceland: And what specifically are you teaching them?

Gógó: “It’s basically blowjobs galore. If I’m asked the question ‘How’s your head?’ my answer is always, ‘Haven’t had any complaints’ so I think I’m the right person to be giving this workshop. It is quite instructional. Gerður, who owns Blush, wrote this article a while ago called how to give a Sparitott (like a premium blowjob). In the article she writes about not only how to make it pleasurable for the other person; but how you can make it fun and interesting for yourself as well. I have expanded on that and made it even more queer.

As a queer person with plenty of oral experience, I feel that I have so much to teach to the straights. I’ve seen them be wowed by the basics a few too many times. I want to leave them with something useful. More satisfied sex = more satisfied life!”

GayIceland: Why do you think it’s important that people are comfortable to talk about sex in general?

Gógó: “It’s a part of life. And I think keeping it hush-hush just introduces so much shame. I’m not saying that it’s a topic that needs to be everywhere all the time, but it should be a topic that’s up for discussion, like when people want to talk about it.”

GayIceland: And in your workshop, do you also talk about sexual health?

Gógó: “Yes of course. There’s discussion about sexual health but there is also a wider array of just sexual wellness topics. This is a way for many people at the events to learn about or explore things they might not have heard about or are too shy to ask about.”

GayIceland: Have you ever hosted something like this before?

Gógó: “Nothing quite like this. I had done loads of bachelorette parties in the past and yes, when you do those kinds of parties, there’s always loads of sex talk but this feels very different to that. The topics I’m touching on require a whole other level of confidence than just a regular drag show.”

GayIceland: Have you always felt this confident?

Gógó: “The short answer is no. I think it’s like my confidence is very learned. Gógo has always been dwelling deep inside of me but I think that letting her out through drag has given me more confidence out of drag. I think this show has also helped. Yes I’m a drag queen but you kind of have to be some sort of a real person to be able to deliver this kind of material.

I think I tend to set up Gógo as a front; but in my daily life it has become very blurred as to where the lines of Siggi end and Gógó begin. But as a polyamorous, pansexual, non-binary person, I feel like I can explore all the directions.

So in a way, as the lines between Siggi and Gógó have blurred, the confidence has just increased. That’s kind of how I feel right now. And it’s realizing that this like, superstar confidence I can have in drag, it’s all me anyway. It’s all coming from me. It’s all my energy.”

GayIceland: Since you’re so orally-gifted, could you give us a BJ tip you swear by?

Gógó: “I think the first thing that comes to mind is so basic to me, but so many people just don’t do it; and that is just lube. Like using lube for blowjobs. I feel like so many people don’t do it; and it’s a total game changer, especially in uncircumcised cases. I feel like it’s extremely helpful. I feel like it just gets everything wet and slippery and easier to work with.

And then another thing that I feel is very, it’s not maybe for everyone, but I think cock rings are just so fun to play with. They can heighten so many senses.”

GayIceland: So how can people get involved if they want to check out one of these workshops?

Gógó: “It’s all at Blush.is. You just buy a ticket and show up. The ticket is only 1000 ISK. The show is about an hour and after the show, all audience members also get to take advantage of a discount on Blush products because it’s in the store. We have 10 dates this summer starting on April 12 and going to the end of June.”
